Rowing Under Delusions of Adequacy
|
The title is a take on a quote by Walter Kerr's "he had delusions of adequacy". It's self-effacing and meant to poke fun at my rowing skills as I train and row with Masters sweep boats.
I enjoy athletics. But I am not by any stretch of my imagination a "jock". My skills often appear to have the best intentions but never to carry into practice. My athletic accomplishments, meager as they are, are personal accomplishments attained in running marathons, walking race walks, and, of late, rowing. All individual sports. Only in rowing have I found a sport I enjoy participating in where team effort is required.
At present I am training for an indoor rowing marathon. My goal is to finish in around 3 hours.
I'll stop the rambling until another day. So ends the first post.
Secondi--2/16/08
Finished my second week of training for the rowing marathon. 4 sessions of 80 minutes is an awlfully long time to be sitting on an erg, even breaking into sets. I'm using my Model B at home, which is about 14-15 years old and has an open cage. Pulling it is a bit harder than pulling a newer Model D or Model E at the gym. but I'm on so long I don't want to bogart the machine because the "calorie counters" get upset if they can't be on any machine for their 5 minutes warmup. Anyway, first of the week was hard, sore and stiff afterward. Then Wednesday's "rest day" I just did Pilates and that must have helped loosen me up because I was faster and less tired on Thursday and Friday. Got in my session before the Chris Botti concert on Valentines night (time to shower and shave too!!). So for the weekend, I'll just row on the water in the club's quad and eight. ciao.
