Hi, Pam - Your note struck a cord - I never really competed in any sport as a kid, but when I was informed that I needed a hip replacement to counter the thigh pain I had for a year or two (at age 51), I developed an interest in multisport/triathlon, and set as a goal completing a triathlon, and at least the swim and bike portions of a 1/2 ironman a year after the surgery. With good coaching, I was able to meet that goal. I used to lifeguard, but never swam competitively - for the past two years, I've worked with the Total immersion system, and have found it terrific - focus on drills, technique and efficiency, and it has made my swimming much more pleasurable. It's quite different from what I was taught as a kid - front quadrant focus, technique focus NOT distance, etc. If you are interested, you might look up their website:
Good luck to you - let me know how things go!
