They will be missed
Posted On 10/07/2008 11:53:38 by TrackCEO
Two notables in masters track died recently. One lived a half-hour from me, yet I never knew him. The other lived clear across the country in Florida, and was a dear friend for more than a decade.
My email pal since the late 1990s was Louise Mead Tricard, who lived in Cape Canaveral. She died Sept. 30 of cancer at a Bronx hospital just days after turning 72.
My relative neighbor was Jock Jocoy, who lived in a coastal town north of San Diego. He died Sept. 27 at his home in Del Mar after... Read More

The water doesn't know how old you are

The night after Michael Phelps butterflew to his mind-boggling eighth gold medal in Beijing, a local TV news channel I was watching in San Diego went to a local youth swim meet and interviewed some kids. They all wanted to be like Mike.
That's natural. Olympic superstars are a great source of inspiration and motivation. But kids aren't the only ones who want to emulate their heroes. How about middle-agers who saw Dara Torres the same night set a personal best in the 50-meter freestyle in ta... Read More

Meet the new CEO
Posted On 07/22/2008 15:27:10 by TrackCEO
In late February, I wrote to Bill Roe, the president of USA Track & Field. Basically, I said: "When you pick a new CEO for USATF, throw a wide net, and don't feel obligated to hire someone with a vast track and field background.
"Just go get the best person for this job."
Bill assured me that the search committee would do just that.
Last Thursday, the USATF Board of Directors approved the search panel's choice to replace Craig Masback, the former world-class miler who took a job... Read More

Dara and Merlene
Posted On 07/15/2008 11:50:20 by TrackCEO
I'm suffering Dara Torres envy. I'm not jealous of Torres making her fifth U.S. Olympic team at age 41, or her 50-meter sprint times in the pool. I'm envious of how the world has elevated her to superstar masters status ahead of others more deserving.
She's a phenom, no doubt. A mother of a young girl, Torres has been profiled in the New York Times Magazine and countless TV and Web clips. At Beijing, she'll swim the 50-meter freestyle, 4x100-meter medley relay, and 4x100-meter freestyle rel... Read More

Is the coach a master(s)?
Posted On 07/07/2008 11:34:53 by coachlisam
I've got a buddy named Dennis. Great guy. He has been racing triathlons and running races for a long time. He is in his 60s now and I saw him at a race on July 4th.
We started talking about training and racing as a master and how that is different from our younger days. We also talked about how important it is to choose a coach who understands the nuances in coaching as that athlete gets further into masters status.
As we've said here many times before, you can still do very... Read More
