In June 1929, national sprint champion Frank Wykoff of Southern California declared that "starting blocks are bunk." He apparently preferred holes dug in the ground. Or something older: a standing start. Nearly 80 years later, thirty-something decathlete Dimitry Yakoushkin of Northern California is wondering if maybe Frank, who died in 1980, was onto something. On his blog last week, Yakoushkin noted the current supremacy of block starts but wonders: "Was a properly controlled study don... Read More
As I've mentioned in previous blog entries, I'm participating in U.S. masters Swimming's "Go the Distance" program. July 1 will be for kids; July 2nd for teens and up.... Read More

Four weeks ago, I called David at his home near San Diego State University to let him know that a Web site archiving his masters track memorabilia -- including results of his San Diego nationals -- had gone live. Mastershistory.org had arrived! As briefly noted by Editor Sean Callahan in this site, mastershistory.org is an attempt by a handful of masters (mainly hurdlers, by happenstanc... Read More
My name is Joe Neal. I'm a resident of The Villages, Fla., and the author of this new blog, The Villages Life. I'll be writing a few times a month about all of the available sports and opportunities here, which range from softball to pickleball and from golf to swimming and everything in between. I'll also keep you posted on my own sporting adventures around the world. In the past 12 months, for instance, I raced in open water swims in an Irish river, the Pacific Ocean and the Columbia...
