Two notables in Masters track died recently. One lived a half-hour from me, yet I never knew him. The other lived clear across the country in Florida, and was a dear friend for more than a decade. My email pal since the late 1990s was Louise Mead Tricard, who lived in Cape Canaveral. She died Sept. 30 of cancer at a Bronx hospital just days after turning 72. My relative neighbor was Jock Jocoy, who lived in a coastal town north of San Diego. He died Sept. 27 at his home in Del Mar after... Read More
Over the weekend, the central Florida town of Clermont hosted the biennial North, Central American and Caribbean Masters Championships --a regional track meet organized by World Masters Athletics. An arm of Gustav blew athletes around a bit, but the biggest storm came online. A collection of world-class M40 sprinters launched a petition drive decrying the National Training Center, where the four-day event was held, as a poor place to stage the USA track and Field Masters national outdoor ch... Hi All! . . . trying to get ready for this year's Rocky Mountain Masters Games -- track & Field. Have never run in this event before, but this year it is the weekend before Labor Day, so I'm hoping to give it a shot. I run sprints, and this year added hurdles (for the first time in 33 years!). I was doing long jump, but fractured my heel this past winter, so probably going to drop that. The event is held in Ft. Collins, CO (home of Colorado State University). If... Read More
I'm suffering Dara Torres envy. I'm not jealous of Torres making her fifth U.S. Olympic team at age 41, or her 50-meter sprint times in the pool. I'm envious of how the world has elevated her to superstar Masters status ahead of others more deserving. She's a phenom, no doubt. A mother of a young girl, Torres has been profiled in the New York Times Magazine and countless TV and Web clips. At Beijing, she'll swim the 50-meter freestyle, 4x100-meter medley relay, and 4x100-meter freestyle rel... Read More
Jeff Hartwig has company. Exactly a week after pole vaulter Hartwig made the U.S. Olympic team at age 40, a New Hampshire race walker won the 20-kilometer event Sunday in Eugene, Ore., at age 44 -- becoming the oldest American on the track team bound for Beijing. Joanne Dow won the 12.4-mile walk by beating her rival (and friend) Teresa Vaill, 45. Tears flowed as Dow finished the race, realizing her Olympic dream after 12 years of frustration and disappointment. "There was a really large... Read More
